Loulé foi ocupada por povos desde a pré-história, a ocupação romana também está documentada, passando também pelo domínio árabe, de cuja fortificação que ainda resta a torre albarrã. Já muito degradado, o castelo sofreu um rude golpe com o terramoto de 1755, a que se seguiu a ocupação das áreas das muralhas, com casas de habitação. Classificado como Monumento Nacional, o que resta foi restaurado e actualmente funcionam no interior do castelo, o museu arqueológico e a biblioteca municipal.
